'Plants: 2400 Copyright-Free Illustrations of Flowers, Trees, Fruits and Vegetables' is another massive, authoritative work by Jim Harter. (An unabridged Dover republication of The Plant Kingdom Compendium.) For this volume, Plants, he concentrated on assembling a definitive collection of images, truly representative of the title. The images for this sourcebook were selected from the late Victorian era; the 1840's to the turn of the century. Examples are identified by Latin name or common name, and there is also a complete glossary of plate references that identifies every image. A bibliography is also included for reference.
Much of the material included in this volume is now quite rare; the earliest examples coming from A History of British Forest Trees, Indigenous and Introduced, published in 1842. At one time in publishing, wood engraving was the primary method of reproducing high quality images.
